Plogging comes from Sweden

The term "plogging" is made up of the Swedish term "plocka upp" (in German: "to lift") and "jogga" (German: "jogging") . The Swede Erik Ahlström started the sport: Annoyed by the rubbish lying around in his hometown of Stockholm, he began to plog – initially alone. A little later there were first reports in the media about him. Ahlström found more and more enthusiastic comrades-in-arms. Eventually, his idea caught on around the world.

Running training with interval effect

With the endurance sport of running, you strengthen your cardiovascular system, prevent illness and reduce stress. However, many plogging fans swear by the interval effect in particular: you have to briefly interrupt your run to collect rubbish. Instead of just bending over, you can also incorporate squats and stretching exercises when lifting. In order not to unnecessarily strain your back, you should bend your knees when picking up heavy objects and not bend over from a standing position. Since running puts a strain on the joints, you definitely need good running shoes. Of course, those who don't like running can also pick up rubbish while briskly walking. Exercising in the fresh air is still good for your health. The main thing is that you have fun.

You should pay attention to this

Gloves are an important utensil for plogging. This will ensure you don't hurt yourself when picking something up. Also, don't forget to wash your hands!

Are you really helping the environment?

You might be wondering if it's even necessary to pick up garbage in cities. Isn't there a municipal cleaning service for that? Plogging is certainly useful in nature, in the forest or on the beach. But even in the city, you may be able to prevent one or the other piece of plastic from being blown into a river or lake and ending up in the sea. With your commitment, you also set an example against garbage and draw the attention of others to their behavior.

This is how you can get involved

Ploggers are now available all over Germany. The "Plogging Cologne" group, for example, now has almost 500 members. On social networks, you can see how much rubbish others have already collected under the hashtags #Plogging and #Plogga. You can also start your own plogging campaign with your friends. So, put your running shoes on and let's go!
