The top 10 best-selling sneakers 2021 at a glance
Sneakers, sneakers, sneakers... They come in all shapes, colors and materials. Some classics have long fought their way to the top of our favorites - and the fashion world would be unimaginable without them. All-white sneakers continue to lead the trend scale and have established themselves as a hip statement piece for every occasion. Regardless of whether the sneakers are made for sports or everyday use, the motto is: what you like, you wear. To keep an eye on the trends, it's worth taking a look at the bestsellers and most popular sneakers of the past year:
Vice President and Senior Advisor of market research firm NPD Group Matt Powell recently published the results of the Sneakernomics 2021 Year in Review. According to reports, 2021 has not been a smooth year for the US athletic footwear market, with annual sales up around 20% year-on-year, poor execution, supply chain delays, the end of funding, and a lack of new products on the market market had a significant impact on business in the fourth quarter. The most important sales markets, i.e. sports and sporting goods shops, were able to increase their sales by around 30% over the course of the year in 2021. The big brands Nike, Jordan and Adidas are still at the top of the game. Nike grew in the low teens on a revenue basis, while Jordan grew in the mid-single digits, well behind the industry trend. Conversely, sales of adidas athletic shoes grew by around 20%, once again overtaking Jordan. This made Adidas the second-biggest athletic footwear brand of 2021. Skechers grew its sales by about 40% for the year, as did Brooks, Vans and Converse. The Puma and Reebok brands even grew by more than 60%.
The Nike Air Force 1 Low is the number 1 best-selling sneaker in the sports industry for the second year in a row. In 2019, the white low-cut sneaker took second place. The shoe impresses with its classic design and can be combined with almost any outfit in a sporty or casual way. (Also read: Louis Vuitton: Nike "Air Force 1" by Virgil Abloh will be auctioned)
Surprisingly, the top 10 sneakers on the 2021 bestseller list are very similar to 2020 – there is only one change in the ranking from last year. The manufacturer Nike occupies the first five places, Nike and Jordan together occupy ninth and tenth positions, while the Adidas NMD R1 takes the only other place from another sporting goods manufacturer in sixth place. It is important to note with the ranking that the data reported here includes purchases recorded by the companies' point-of-sale systems. As a result, sales via secondary markets and other e-commerce channels may not have been included in the calculations. Here is an overview of the top 10 best-selling sneakers of 2021:
