🏆Our editorial favorites at a glance:
These four characteristics are important for runners in a running shoe:
A running shoe should combine these properties in the best possible way. Recently, the reactivity of the midsole material has also often been mentioned: the energy generated when the foot hits the ground should be returned as strongly as possible when the foot pushes off. However, every runner has a different perception of what is optimal – because every running style and every foot is different. That's why we try to combine as much data and test impressions as possible in our shoe descriptions.
Following the test reports, you will find some tips for your individual choice of running shoes. The more stable and comfortable models are listed higher up in this list, towards the bottom the shoes are lighter and more agile, i.e. suitable for faster running speeds and also lighter in weight. Test impression: "That's great", is the comment of a test runner when he saw the UB 21, as it is called by fans. This means above all the sole. And it keeps what its looks promise: maximum comfort. The “LEP-Torsion” element ensures “that the sole plops back nicely and rolls more dynamically at the push-off”, according to a test runner. In the latest version, Adidas has redesigned the upper. As a result, the UB 21 is slightly smaller, but sits very securely in the midfoot area and on the heel and is still best for narrow to medium-wide feet. It is an all-round shoe that is suitable for all training sessions.

Test impression: The Nimbus belongs to the top group of the comfort class. A test runner promptly remarked: "Asics has taken it to the extreme here in terms of soft rolling behavior." In the forefoot area there is also GEL cushioning under the ball of the foot plus the Flytefoam Propel midsole, but the running feeling falls by the wayside. But who If you want to run fast, you prefer to use other (Asics) models. The comfort artist Nimbus takes care of the gentle pampering program for runners' feet. Definitely worth mentioning: The women's version is "gender specific", which not only affects the fit, but also the sole construction: the heel is higher, the forefoot is more flexible. "A feel-good shoe for long runs, leisurely runs and chatting," sums up one test runner.

Test impression: "Significantly improved", summed up an enthusiastic test runner who had already run the previous versions. New Balance has accessed its in-house archive and refreshed the Vongo: The "Fresh Foam" midsole, known from the very popular and well-selling sister model 1080, is 5 millimeters wider on the Vongo and has an 8 millimeter drop. In addition, the shoe has an integrated pronation support, "which a non-overpronator doesn't notice," writes a test runner. The rolling process is noticeably stabilized if necessary, "without the dynamics suffering too much," according to the test conclusion.

Test impression: The stable version GTS of Glycerin is now available alongside the neutral variant Glycerin 19 - and it really impressed the test runners. The GTS version has stabilizing elements on the outside of the midsole with the "Guide Rails". These act like a kind of railing and reduce buckling of the foot during the rolling movement. This is an interesting mixture, because the glycerine is very flexible and torsion-friendly at the same time, extremely comfortably cushioned, and it offers a soft rolling behavior that is recommended for heel strikes. "The shoe has relieved me of my knee pain," writes a test runner enthusiastically.

Test impression: For the 25th anniversary, Mizuno didn't give the Wave Rider a new design, the shoe comes across as simple as usual. But that's an understatement, because the Rider's midsole has been significantly upgraded. It still offers 12 mm drop, but at the same time more stability due to the "Wave Plate" reaching further forward, which ensures more stability, pressure distribution and durability. The integrated heel cap provides additional support and the forefoot area is very flexible. The shoe is "springy, but not too softly cushioned," praised a test runner. "Ideal for light and medium weight normal foot runners at any pace."

Test impression: The checkered flag look makes the shoe look fast. But the tuning of the midsole and the associated rolling comfort are designed for maximum comfort. Saucony relies on the "PWRRUN+" midsole foam known from its predecessor, which provides a soft cushioning feeling and gentle rolling comfort. "It even feels soft for the forefoot and midfoot," says one test runner, "but it runs very comfortably at a slow training pace." The new upper material is noticeably more airy: "The shoe feels lighter with it," says one test runner, " but it's not as tight in the midfoot area."

Test impression: Without the abbreviation ST, the Solar Glide is a neutral training shoe; in the ST version, however, it offers a reinforcement in the midsole, the "Solar Propulsion Rail", which ensures better foot guidance. The rolling comfort is characterized by the Boost midsole, which is known for its high cushioning comfort. In contrast to the Gel-Kayano or Cloudflyer, however, the Solar Glide is also suitable for midfoot impactors. "The curved last shape of the sole even gives the shoe a certain dynamic," says a test runner. Of course, the heel runners, who are also most effectively supported by the midsole, can also fully enjoy the cushioning comfort of the Solar Glide. The heel cap was particularly praised, "a blessing for sore Achilles tendons", according to a tester. Compared to the previous version, the weight has been reduced by around five percent, so that the shoe is now a few grams lighter, but this does not have a noticeable effect on the running feeling.

Test impression: The shoe is definitely suitable for collecting miles. The basic technical requirements come with the voluminous midsole, which is 31 millimeters thick at the heel alone. Most of it is "React" foam, as Nike calls the tried-and-true compound praised on the Infinity React. In addition, like the Miler, the Miler 2 has a very wide and stiff sole, and a plastic element in the inner heel area provides additional support. "Nevertheless, the React Miler 2 is quite agile for such a stable shoe," said one of our test runners in amazement. The Miler 2 shows that stability and agility are no longer a contradiction in terms. The shoe is very well suited for long training runs where the foot is well supported and there is plenty of space in the forefoot area. The only criticism was the upper material, which provides good support but is comparatively warm. Compared to its predecessor, the Miler 2 is slightly lighter, but it is still not a lightweight.

Test impression: The new Gel-Kayano is a real highlight this fall and received the "Best Update Award" from the RUNNER'S WORLD test team - this is awarded to running shoe models that have been functionally revised in terms of their running characteristics. The Kayano 28 is an excellent update of the popular 27 version of this classic, which has repeatedly won RUNNER'S WORLD readers' choice in its category. The fit with the very comfortable shoe collar and the padded tongue has remained the same, only the toe box has been slightly enlarged. A flattened external heel counter has been added. Combined with the also revised "Dynamic Duomax" pronation support, the Kayano 28 offers the usual stability and ensures a secure hold. And thanks to the new, very reactive "Flytefoam Blast" midsole foam, there is a much more dynamic walking experience. Overall a stable, very well cushioned training shoe for light to heavy runners.

Test impression: Two are better than one, that also applies to the Cloudstratus in any case: The "Cloudtec" damping arranged twice here holds and dampens better than with any other On model to date. This is fully confirmed by test runners: "The Cloudstratus cushions very pleasantly," writes one tester and adds: "I didn't know that from On until now." In combination with the stable Speedboard and the external heel cap, the Cloudstratus offers a lot of stability. The "star lacing" is fiddly, but ensures a good fit, the fit is rather wide like its predecessor. The curved last shape is well suited for heel and midfoot strikes.

Test impression: The Adrenaline is a constant (b) runner, for the fourth time in a row it has achieved first place in its category (motion control shoes) in the RUNNER'S WORLD readers' choice: and with the best result it has ever achieved in the readers' choice . With the current revision, its target group has become even larger. The Adrenaline is a stable constructed training shoe. The midsole cushions well, especially for heel walkers, but is not too soft and offers even smoother ride comfort than the GTS 20. The "Guiderails" are something like a lane-keeping assistant in a car; the more the movement deviates from the center, the more the rail intervenes. Otherwise: the upper is very soft, the strap is connected to the sole area, the drop is quite high, the forefoot is quite wide. A tip for beginners or frequent runners.

Test impression: The stable GT-2000 fits right into the gap between the Brooks Adrenaline - which is quite a bit heavier and has a higher drop - and the Saucony Guide - which has a little less drop but still more support than the Asics. In the new version, the GT is noticeably more dynamic: the forefoot area is more flexible, and the cushioning is given a dash of dynamism by the reactive Flytefoam. A critical test runner remarked in astonishment, "Oh, a stable shoe in which I feel very comfortable on calm runs and roll off safely without being constrained." Otherwise, the GT remains true to its model tradition as an all-time reliable training shoe. Good: There is a wider fit and it is also recommended for heavier runners. On top of that, the new, seamless upper improves the fit.

Test impression: The Guide 14 has undergone an upgrade, which – similar to Brooks and Asics (above) – has become significantly more comfortable in the new version. This is due to the Guide 14's additional cushioning layer with "PWRRUN+", a very soft and responsive foam. As a result, there is at least 32.5 millimeters of cushioning foam under the rear foot. This dampens the rolling process, which is still characterized by stability - reason: the very stable medial TPU construction. Runners who want to slow down the inward bending of the foot will find a robust solution here. In addition, the well-padded, but nevertheless extremely stable heel cap prevents the foot from breaking out to the side. The good fit in the midfoot also helps, where the strap is connected to the side of the midsole via elastic straps.

Test impression: The Cloudflyer supplements the more stable Cloudace and Cloudstratus models in the On program. With this shoe, the cushioning aspect is more important. Thanks to the use of "Helion" foam in the midsole, the new Cloudflyer offers more responsiveness than the previous model, making it lighter and softer cushioned. It is noticeably more stable in the rearfoot area, also thanks to the revised heel cap, which - this was praised in the test - only covers the heel and does not hit the Achilles tendon. The testers also liked the flexibility in the forefoot area, "at least for a shoe of this class," noted one tester. The Cloudflyer is more suited to wider feet, and works very well for heavier athletes, especially rearfoot runners. With these, the sole cushions noticeably better than with metatarsal pads.

Test impression: The first Novablast was an immediate success. The basis was the very softly cushioned, yet very reactive midsole (Flytefoam Blast). With the Novablast 2, it has a slightly different shape, now offers a drop of only 8 millimeters and is equipped with a stronger heel stabilizer. But the Novablast is not really stable, it offers a lot of flexibility, especially in the forefoot area - excellent for efficient runners and forefoot and midfoot dropouts who can cover their entire training spectrum with the Novablast 2. On the other hand, it is less suitable for runners with weak ankles, heavy weight or a tendency to pronation.

Test impression: "Keep it simple" is an old saying in design engineering - which Reebok has taken to heart here, as with the previous model "Forever Floatride Energy". Key updates include the revised midsole and a new mesh upper. "What's the catch?" A test runner asked himself in view of the comparatively low price. After a thorough examination, however, he was convinced that the shoe can definitely keep up with other models. The rather narrow fit reminded the tester of the On Cloud, for example. And the very comfortable rolling behavior "reminds a bit of the Saucony Triumph," the tester continued. In fact, the shoe with the Floatride Energy midsole foam proves to be very reactive in the laboratory test. The narrow construction, including the outsole, is at the expense of stability, but ensures a very low weight and invites you to run fast. Conclusion: An uncomplicated shoe with a good price-performance ratio.

Test impression: With the Aion, True Motion launched its second model after the Nevos. Characteristic: Under the rear foot, the sole unit is constructed in a horseshoe shape. The idea: from the very first moment of the rolling movement, the forces that occur are optimally centered in the joints. Torsional forces and the resulting strain on knees or Achilles tendons are minimized because the point of application of force acts on the longitudinal axis of the foot. The cushioning foam is extremely soft. And, be careful, when you try it on, your heel is unusually high in the shoe, the first few meters are usually very unusual. The high blast is then put into perspective when running when the "U-Foam" is compressed. The test results were very different: heel runners praised the comfort and the wider fit, midfoot and lighter runners found the running feeling to be rather "spongy and numb". In any case, the Aion is the more comfortable and also much more stable alternative to the Nevos model from True Motion.

Test impression: The recipe for this shoe is one of the oldest from the running shoe kitchen: The Pegasus is the epitome of a good cushioning shoe. Like last year's 37, the current version also has an air cushion ("Zoom Air") in the forefoot area, with higher pressure in the men's version, by the way. The full-length midsole is made of "React" foam, a specialty of the Nike chefs, which is very springy and at the same time very comfortable and flexible. In the upper, the 38 offers a little more space and better heel support than its predecessor. However, the testers report that the shoe is rather narrow in the toe area.

Test impression: The tuning of the "Fresh Foam X" midsole hits the sweet spot of cushioning, flexibility and stability for many test runners. Ideal for a heavily used training shoe. Praise also came from the runners, who found the very softly cushioned shoes too soft. In fact, lightweight and medium-weight runners felt very comfortable with the running characteristics (the New Balance 1080 is recommended for heavier runners). The knit upper, designed according to functional zones, sits rather tight in the forefoot area and can also be easily adapted to narrower feet with the excellent lacing.

Test impression: Mizuno has never had so much comfort. In addition to the Wave Rider and its predecessor, the Wave Sky Neo 2 is the first shoe to benefit from newly developed midsole technologies based on the use of lighter and more reactive synthetic materials. The runner feels that from the very first step. Except for the firm heel cup, the Neo 2 does not have any stability elements, but a softer insert under the heel in the midsole, paired with the torsional stiffness of the midsole, ensures a lot of stability during the rolling process. In addition, the upper material, which is actually very soft, encloses the midfoot area very tightly. This ensures comfortable and stable rolling behavior. "This is a comfortable shoe for walking at a leisurely pace, which is also suitable for people with a higher body weight," said one tester. Typical for Mizuno is the relatively large blast.

Test impression: The "U" on the upper not only indicates a smiley, but also stands for the innovation of this young German brand: A U-shaped recess in the middle of the heel ensures that the stress forces are ideally distributed when walking. Many testers were impressed by the comfortable walking impression, the relatively slim constructed sole has "a fairly precise pressure point despite the comfort", according to one tester. The tuning is ideal for light and medium-heavy runners. With the water-repellent upper and the non-slip sole, the Nevos Elements is a beautiful autumn training shoe.

Test impression: Brooks has carefully spiced up the ricochet. After the predecessor Ricochet 2, which was already equipped with the reactive DNA AMP foam, was praised for its famous rolling properties, the 3 series has been optimized especially in the upper material: The knitted fabric is more breathable, the lace eyelets are more stable and the lacing holds the This makes the instep even safer, which is also a tip for narrower feet. "Good fit in the heel area, no pressure, no slipping out," praises one tester and confirms "sock-like fit on the ankle." This makes the light shoe ideal for brisk training. The only point of criticism: when wet, the sole quickly becomes slippery.

Test impression: In terms of texture and feel, the thin upper of the Velociti Wind almost looks like papyrus. Midsole and outsole consist of a functional unit that ensures low weight and a direct, light running feeling. "A nice alternative to the often much softer cushioned training shoes," says one test runner. The Velociti Wind is suitable for light to medium-heavy runners and also for faster training runs, the upper material and sole harmonize well. The sizes are rather small. The Bluetooth chip integrated into the sole can be coupled with a smartphone app and provides interesting running data.

Test impression: Salomon's entry into the field of road running shoes began with the Sonic series. The fit of the shoes is based on that of the popular trail models, and overall the series has been thoroughly revised and differentiated for the target group. The Sonic 4 Accelerate is a lightweight trainer designed for faster runs. Under the heel there is a plastic element with particularly cushioning properties - a kind of shock absorber. "Due to the flat sole and the lower weight, the Accelerate is actually also suitable for brisk training tempos," says a test runner. It is suitable for light to medium weight runners with rather narrow feet. However, the hold of the heel in the shoe was sometimes criticized. The discreet optics scored plus points.

Test impression: The most windy thing about the current version of the Ride is probably the eye-catching look. Because otherwise, Saucony remains true to its model tradition and offers a neutral shoe in the best sense: the rolling comfort is characterized by the very flexible sole, the cushioning comfort is very high. "PWRRUN" (pronounced: Powerrun) is what Saucony calls this very light mixture, which ensures a soft running feeling - even for middle and forefoot runners. This makes the Ride an in-house competitor to the much heavier Triumph and an alternative to models such as Adidas Ultraboost or Brooks Glycerin.

Test impression: The previous model was awarded the RUNNER'S WORLD Editor's Choice Award, so the new GoRun Ride 8 is in the best tradition. The characteristics with neutral rolling behavior and the structure have remained the same, the most important changes are the Goodyear outsole ("grippy on any surface", according to a tester) and the "Hyperburst" midsole. This transforms the new GoRun Ride into a maximum comfort shoe without sacrificing dynamics. Thanks to the moderately curved sole construction, the shoe is also well suited for midfoot runners and faster training speeds.

Test impression: The eighth version continues the success story of Hoka's most popular training shoe. The seventh was the lightest, the eighth now has a new midsole material that's said to be 15 percent lighter, but the overall weight has stayed the same. The sole (29 millimeters thick at the heel) has the same characteristics, only the contact point on the heel has been rounded off more. According to the test runners, this contributes to the fact that the running impression is slightly softer than the predecessor, and that suits a calmer training pace better. The now even softer upper material ensures good wearing comfort.

Test impression: With the Marlin, sustainability pioneer Veja presents a light, flexible model designed for faster speeds with the running characteristics of an everyday training shoe. The comparatively flat midsole construction, which consists of 60 percent cane sugar, together with the upper material made of 100 percent recycled plastic, gives a direct walking feeling. The outsole is made from 32 percent sustainable rubber sourced from trees in the Amazon. Above all, the wide ball area ensures a secure footing and a powerful impression. The Marlin runs extremely dynamically and "is more than a sustainable insider tip", according to a tester.

Test impression: The Go Run Razor, which received a RUNNER'S WORLD award, is no longer an insider tip. The super light midsole foam weighs less than conventional midsoles and offers a clearly noticeable rebound. "The shoe has a very unique ride," says one test runner, "softly cushioned and highly springy at the same time." The "+" version of the Razor has a very grippy Continental outsole and a light, thin mesh upper, is very good ventilated and adaptable,. The only point of criticism in the test: the shoe is rather narrow in the toe area. Conclusion: A flexible, softly cushioned and light speed training shoe with competition suitability.

Test impression: At Scott, running shoes are still somewhat overshadowed by helmets, bikes and skis. The Cruise deserves full attention: The sole, which is curved at the heel and toe, ensures a very dynamic roll-off behavior, not only with heel but also with midfoot strikes. The "Kinetic Foam" midsole hits the sweet spot during training: "The cushioning is there, but not too soft, just enough that you can still feel the ground," said a test runner. The upper material and its easily adjustable lacing also received praise - and fits medium-wide to narrow feet.

Test impression: Mizuno has created a total work of art here. "Wow, is it comfortable", begins a runner in her test report. The upper is made of one piece, consisting of two layers: an outer knitted fabric with areas of different firmness and light padding. The combination follows all movements and nestles gently against the foot. Tongue, heel area and shoe collar are very comfortable. The stable heel cap and toe protection fit seamlessly into the shaft. The "Foam Wave" gives the shoe dynamism, "even for long-distance runs," according to one tester, "but I can also imagine half-marathons or marathons with the Skyrise 2."

Test impression: The second edition of the Cloud X has been revised in many points and now offers significantly better running and rolling qualities. This is mainly due to the much more reactive and better cushioning "Helion" foam that was used throughout. In combination with a flexible midsole plate, the Speedboard, the Cloud X invites you to run faster. However, primarily on the road and on solid ground, also because small stones tend to get caught in the Cloud sole on forest paths. "For me, the Cloud X is an ideal shoe for my tempo endurance run," says one tester. Important: The fit is rather narrow. The metatarsal pads in particular praised the walking comfort, the rolling behavior and the "very good cushioning effect given the light weight".

Test impression: Four millimeters can make a huge difference in the width of a shoe. That's exactly how On increased the cloudflow in the new "Wide" variant. And what did that bring? "The shoe is more comfortable now," says a test runner with a slightly wider foot who has also run in the Cloudflow before. "It doesn't affect the walking characteristics, but I feel more comfortable in the shoe now." The rolling process of the light On model is characterized by the direct walking feeling known from the predecessor and the flexible sole construction in the middle and forefoot area.

Test impression: As one of the very few training shoes with a drop of zero millimeters, the Escalante 2.5 represents a real alternative: the foot is neutral and flat in the shoe. In addition, the typical Altra last shape in the forefoot area offers a lot of space, which is often praised by test runners. "That's what I like about the Escalante," says a test runner, who also likes to wear barefoot shoes in everyday life. The lacing and the cuddly upper material were also praised, but above all the outstanding comfort of the well-rebounding midsole, which is somewhat more stable than the previous model.

Test impression: Scott knows his way around rocker constructions. The sole construction of the Pursuit, which is curved at the front and back, is reminiscent of competition shoes, although its volume (30 millimeters under the heel) indicates the high cushioning comfort. In addition, the shoe offers a very fine, solid upper, which is supported by an easy-to-adjust lacing and a stable heel construction. The fit, which is unsuitable for narrow feet, was praised by test runners with medium-wide feet, as was the running properties. "Whether you're at a leisurely pace or running at less than 4 minutes per kilometer, the ride comfort is simply great," says a test runner.

Test impression: Joe Nimble occupies a niche: that of flat shoes with a drop of zero millimeters. While the manufacturer usually designs its shoes in a minimalist way, the Addict offers an unusually large number of shoes. Equipped with a 10 millimeter thick EVA midsole, it offers barefoot walking comfort and plenty of space for the toes despite the flat shoe construction. "When you run, you feel that you are standing flat in the shoe, and afterwards you feel that your muscles had to work harder," says one tester. The outsole is safe on wet and dry asphalt, the workmanship is outstanding, the fit is very wide.

Test impression: The Gel-Cumulus in its 23rd version is as soft as Asics has been for a long time. The midsole cushions over the entire length with the proven "FlyteFoam" from the Japanese manufacturer, but in a new version with lower density. This makes the shoe look a little lighter and more reactive than its predecessors. Furthermore, there are of course the usual gel cushioning elements in the forefoot and rearfoot area. In addition, there is a new dynamic through the enlarged flex grooves of the outsole in the forefoot area and a revision of the outsole construction in the heel area, which allows a smoother transition of the foot after landing. Thanks to the seamless mesh upper material in the forefoot area, the well-padded, stretchable tongue with flat lacing in the midfoot area and the heel flap, which is thickly padded around the entire shoe collar, the foot feels well embedded in the Cumulus 23. Comfort continues to be the focus of the new Cumulus.

Test impression: The Ghost is still Brooks' most popular shoe. The fit hasn't changed compared to its predecessor, but the new upper is more breathable and provides a better fit. The midsole is now made of "DNA Loft" material, which provides even more balanced rolling behavior and supports the segmented outsole. However, it quickly becomes slippery when wet. Also in its 14th version, the Ghost continues the tradition as a universally applicable, neutral training shoe. Incidentally, the Ghost is now made from 60 percent recycled materials and is still a few grams lighter.

Test impression: Hoka once had a brilliant idea: combine the voluminous EVA midsole, which is characteristic of the brand, with a thin carbon plate, which accelerates the rolling behavior of the foot, or – as one tester put it – “gives you the feeling of being light tilt forward". The shoe is light, well cushioned and dynamic - a great combination for long competition distances and for long endurance runs. It is not for nothing that ultra runner Jim Walmsley runs from record to record in the model. The shaft of the socks is worth mentioning: it improves the fit, but it takes some getting used to: some people will need the model half a size larger. Conclusion: The combination of functions is unique and a real enrichment in the Hoka model range. Compared to the Carbon X, Hoka was even able to take a noticeable development step with the Carbon X 2.

Test impression: The Adizero is capable of making records, as the Adios Pro 2 and its predecessor have proven several times. The basis is the two-layer "Lightstrike Pro" midsole, a foam that proves to be very reactive. The rocker shape offers a dynamic rolling process with little loss of energy. The voluminous sole is 39 millimeters thick under the rear foot. Unlike Nike, Adidas uses individual, slightly flexible, carbon-reinforced "Energyrods" that reach under the forefoot in the midsole like individual fingers and are intended to support the impression. That means a clear advantage in rolling behavior, as a test runner sums up. "The Pro 2 is more flexible compared to other carbon models." The running behavior is therefore less capricious, suitable for street competitions from 5 kilometers to a marathon.

A lot of time, science, sweat and miles go into every test. In the practical test, the running shoes are tested in real use, this is about the subjective running impression of experienced test runners. In the laboratory test, the shoes are objectively tested according to standardized criteria. Both test results are included in the evaluation in our running shoe test.
Praxis-Test: Für diesen Test waren mehr als 400 Läufer unterwegs. They run at least 150 kilometers with each shoe and then fill out test forms.
So all running shoes are comparable to each other. The editors summarize the results of the wear and laboratory test.
