New York. A pair of US rapper Kanye West (43) at The sneakers worn at the 2008 Grammy Awards have fetched $1.8 million at auction. The auction house Sotheby's announced on Monday in New York that it was the highest price ever paid for a pair of sneakers at a public auction.
The black leather shoes, size 45/46, were made exclusively for West's appearance and marked the beginning of his own shoe line. Sneaker collector Ryan Chang has now put the pair up for auction, and sneakers investment platform Rares bought them for a record price.
Exceptional sneakers have always been featured at auctions high prices made headlines. In the summer, for example, a pair of white sneakers that a co-founder of the sporting goods company Nike had handmade around 50 years ago was auctioned for $162,500. Shortly before, a pair of basketball legend Michael Jordan's sneakers brought in $560,000.
