Alain Berset is the Kennedy of the Confederation. With 31 members of the Council of States of the Social Democrats in his home canton of Freiburg, with 33 deputy parliamentary group leaders of his party, with 39 members of the Federal Council.

Berset has been the country's corona general for a year. Now it is clear: the most important man in the government of the Alpine republic is acting without a concept or plan.

The result: Switzerland is in danger of losing much that has made it great for decades. Debt instead of substance, unemployment instead of prosperity, online companies from abroad instead of SMEs.

When offices and shops become deserted and a real estate crisis breaks out, even spilling over into private homes, then a crash is imminent.

For Berset none of that seems so important. Apparently he doesn't know what he's doing anymore.

At least that's how it seems increasingly. Most of the time he puts his measures before experts who warn.

But the Tages-Anzeiger writes today that Berset acted against the epidemiologists last summer when he gave the economy more freedom.

Then, in the fall, the emergency brakes. And now Berset is losing his support – across the board.

When everyone from the top union boss to the business think tank Avenir Suisse demands openings, then it's clear: Berset has gambled away.

That was most evident this morning. The Swiss-German radio SRF reported extensively on the story in the Tages-Anzeiger and the demands for normality.

Did Berset fail?

The state broadcaster head-on against the central magistrate of the crisis - that's a rarity.

Berset had been praised to the skies by the same media regardless of the facts and achievements. This obviously led him to believe that he was in control of the situation.

This possible self-assessment is based on a thin track record. Berset has never been an entrepreneur, he only knows the private sector from hearsay.

The Romand went his way over the eternal school bench. After completing his political studies at the University of Neuchâtel, he worked on his doctoral thesis for 9 years.

9 years: In the 1970s, Berset would have been in good company. Already at the turn of the millennium, when today's top politician needed so long for it, that was a considerable amount of time.

As a doctor of economics, Berset was drawn to the state and theory right from the start.

He was a "guest researcher" at the "Institute for Economic Research" in Hamburg and then a "strategic consultant" in the economic department of the canton of Neuchâtel.

According to his CV, from 2006 until his election to the Federal Council at the end of 2011, Berset worked as an “independent strategy and communications consultant”.

No ropes in the economy torn, no rise in the shark tank of a multinational, never taken entrepreneurial risks, no belief in your own "baby" as a startup.

But an eternal student and lift politician of the Social Democrats - probably thanks to connections in Freiburg, where long-term SP President Christian Levrat comes from.

Now the wind has turned. In other countries, demands for his resignation would rain down. Not with us.
