Action on Friday on the market square in Brakel: Red shoes as a symbol of violence on women
Höxter district (red).Annually on 25.November the international day "No to violence on women" with numerous actions related to the topic of the problem (domestic) violence and thus fights discrimination and violence against women and girls.A nationwide week of action started on Monday.
The working group "Against violence against women and children in the Höxter district" and the equal opportunities officers in the Höxter district want to during the campaign week on Friday, 26.November, set an example and sensitize that domestic violence is not an individual, but a social problem that runs through all social classes.
"Out of shame, many affected people are silent about it.In Germany, around every fourth woman and every fifth child are victims of domestic violence, ”explains Ingrid Roland from the working group."Violence against women mainly takes place in the supposed shelter of their own four walls.The specific crime scene does not always have to be your own apartment.Violence violates body and soul and has serious effects on the entire life."
As a sign of solidarity with women affected by violence, red shoes will be set up on the Brakel market square on Friday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m..In the action, every pair of shoes should stand for a woman who died by violence, with the color red for spilled blood."Everyone has the right to life and physical integrity, according to Article 2 of our basic.But reality often looks different.In 2020, 245 women died in Germany through domestic violence. Die Aktionsform geht zurück auf die mexikanische Künstlerin Elina Chauvet, die das Projekt „Zapatos Rojos" (Rote Schuhe) 2009 ins Leben gerufen hat und schon in verschiedenen Ländern Aktionen mit roten Schuhen gemacht hat, um an vermisste, misshandelte, vergewaltigte und ermordete Frauen zu erinnern.
