Munich – how could it come to this? That's what millions of football fans around the world are asking themselves. Because Ronaldinho is currently in trouble. According to reports in the Spanish media, the 2002 world champion in Brazil has tax debts of two million euros. The Brazilian tax office only found 25 reais in a search of Ronaldinho's accounts, which corresponds to almost six euros.
As a footballer, Ronaldinho has achieved everything. He won the World Cup with Brazil, was World Player of the Year in 2004 and 2005, European, South American and Brazilian Player of the Year, won the Champions League, Spanish and Italian championships, an Olympic bronze medal and much more.
The noble technician nimbly mixed up the opposing defenses at will, he scored 185 often spectacular goals in 499 first division games and scored 33 times in 97 international matches for the Selecao. Ronaldinho played for Gremio Porto Alegre, Paris Saint-Germain, FC Barcelona, AC Milan and Flamengo Rio de Janeiro, among others. In short: he had a picture-perfect sporting career and earned millions.
But now all the money should be gone. The tax debts had accumulated because Ronaldinho and his brother had sugar mills built illegally in a nature reserve in 2015. The consequence of the misery: According to information from the Spanish newspaper "Marca", the Brazilian authorities confiscated Ronaldinho's passport.
The honorary citizen of Rio de Janeiro shouldn't really care too much about two million euros in taxes, since he has earned many times over in his career. In 2008, Forbes magazine named him the highest-paid soccer player in the world with an annual income of $29.5 million. In December 2017, his fortune was estimated at 83 million euros. Is everything supposed to be gone now? Difficult to imagine, even if he spends the money on a large scale.
Reports on Ronaldino's extravagant party and nightlife are legendary. Together with his buddies and also former colleagues like Deco or Rafael Marquez, he is said to have regularly walked around the houses until the early hours of the morning during his engagement in Barcelona. At the time, FC Barcelona would often have had to protect the kickers from alleged injuries if they were once again unable to play.
He had previously attracted attention in Paris. His former coach Luis Fernandez revealed in his memoirs that Ronaldinho "did what he wanted. In the training camp he brought women into his room." That would have been too much even for the teammates.
And instead of showing up punctually for the start of training at AC Milan, Ronaldinho also liked to treat himself to a few extra rounds of football tennis at Copacabana, which he finished with a beer in his hand surrounded by scantily clad samba dancers. He had never put anything on diet plans anyway.
To this end, he built a dream villa for around 10.5 million euros on a 1,000 square meter property in the Barra da Tijuca district of Rio de Janeiro, which lacked no luxury. At the 2014 World Cup, anyone who brought the necessary small change could even spend the night in it. Because Ronaldinho had rented the villa on a daily basis via the Airbnb platform. The fun should cost 11,342 euros per night for up to eight fans. But the host was not at home during the tournament.
Just six months ago, the bon vivant made headlines when he allegedly married two women at once. Together with long-term friends Priscilla Coelho and Beatriz Souza, whom he met and fell in love with in 2016, according to a report by the Swiss "Blick" he should indulge in a happy threesome. Incidentally, the two women should receive the same monthly allowance of 1,700 euros. If that's not a bargain.
The fact that the world star, who officially ended his career at the beginning of the year, recently openly supported the right-wing populist and new President Jair Bolsonaro in the presidential election, is only a side note in comparison. Just like Ronalindo's promotion of windy cryptocurrencies, which financial experts are critical of.
Whether Ronaldinho will be able to continue his extravagant lifestyle remains to be seen. After all, it is also said that his long-time sponsor Nike has launched new shoes with his name on them, which will bring him a large income again.
When he gets his passport back, nothing stands in the way of a flight to Frankfurt. The charity game between the teams "Ronaldinho and friends" and the "Rene Adler All-Stars" is to take place there on November 17 in the Commerzbank Arena.
Whether he really has no more money, only he knows. But you can't really imagine that.
