Munich - Bayern coach Julian Nagelsmann was clear at the press conference on Friday: "The preparation was so-so, there was some light and some shadows."
But he didn't mean his team's bumpy preparations for the season as a whole, but spoke of Frenchman Michael Cuisance. The German record champions shelled out eight million euros a good two years ago for the midfielder, who came from league rival Borussia Mönchengladbach.
The 22-year-old made 11 appearances in his debut season before being loaned out to Olympique Marseille last season. But things didn't go according to plan for the native of Strasbourg in the south of France either. Although Cuisance made 30 appearances, they weren't really able to gather convincing arguments with two goals and one assist.
Nevertheless, the Munich team gave him another chance to break through in Bayern's star ensemble. But Cuisance has not been able to use this at all so far. While players like Armindo Sieb and Josip Stanisic took their chance in the thinned-out squad, there was little positive to report from Cuisance.
In the friendly against Napoli, he lost the ball twice and conceded twice as a result. When it came to energy and motivation, the talented Frenchman didn't exude much esprit either. So it's no wonder that the reports of a premature departure from Munich, Cuisance's contract runs until 2024, have been piling up recently.
"Of course he can stay in the squad. As far as transfer issues are concerned, I'm the wrong person to talk to. I assess the sporting situation," Nagelsmann explained the situation of his protégé. But the evidence suggests that Munich is no longer necessarily planning with the French. The jersey with his name is no longer available in the Bayern fan shop.
And Nagelsmann said: "There is a Leon (Goretzka, d.Red.), Josh (Joshua Kimmich) or Coco (Corentin Tolisso) much further in the position. That's why he has to fight for it and step on the gas."
But given the competition at his position and his age of 22, Cuisance would probably be wise to try his luck at another club. However, many a club could be put off by Cuisance's statements and actions in recent years. For example, he forced his departure from Gladbach with demonstrative listlessness. Reports also circulated that Cuisance had insulted Gladbach's officials several times.
In Munich, he was kicked out of the starting lineup at a second-team game because he couldn't find his shoes and therefore didn't show up in time for the team's meeting place.
If Cuisance wants to achieve a lasting breakthrough, it is important to continue to mature on and off the pitch, because talent alone is not enough. Or to stay in the style of Nagelsmann, it needs a lot more light than shadow.
