The core of the new rule, which will come into force on April 30, is that shoes must be publicly available in stores for four months before they can be used in the race.
"If a shoe is not available to everyone, it will be classified as a prototype and its use in competition will not be allowed," the world federation said in a statement: "If a shoe is available to everyone but is available to an athlete for aesthetic or medical reasons modified, it is allowed." In addition, in future a sole must not be thicker than 40 millimeters, and the shoe must not contain more than one rigid plate.
The ban primarily applies to street running shoes from the sporting goods giant Nike. The Kenyan Eliud Kipchoge, among others, was the first person to run a marathon in under two hours in a project in his innovative Vaporfly shoes. The Vaporfly is said to have given runners a time advantage of three to four percent, which sparked controversy.
